AP & SEND Briefing 25th September 2024
Welcome to our mid-week round-up of Alternative Provision and SEND news across the South West and beyond.
Below you'll find summaries and links of what's been in the news recently, the latest thinking and some of the great training links we think you'll find useful. Grab a coffee and take 10 minutes to get updated and through the midweek hump.
Safeguarding and Tuition
A staggering 92 tutors have been convicted of sexual offences over the last 20 years. In response, Dame Rachel de Souza is now calling for system reform. Next Steps Education, founded by two former teachers & SLT, made it one of our fundamental principles to only work with qualified educators and follow KCSIE and Safer Recruitment processes for our team of tutors and mentors. Our robust safeguarding policies and procedures are known and followed by all in our organisation.

Children & Young People's take on wellbeing in the South West
I was introduced to the Kailo project at a recent One Atlantic meeting. Kailo aims to develop strategies to support CYP mental health through co-design. As such, they are working with local schools and communities to hear the voice and lived experiences of children and young people. Their Early Discovery phase revealed some insightful views on life and wellbeing for CYP across Northern Devon. You can read their report at the Kailo website.
Festival of Inclusive Education
The line-up of speakers at this online event looks fantastic. The day-long event will explore:
- How to provide effective and efficient support for different learning needs
- How tech tools and AI can support personalised learning
- How to implement a digital strategy in your setting
- Why pedagogy-led technology is the way forward
It takes place on 26th November from 9am-2pm. You can register for free at the Texthelp website.
UNITED NATIONS' SUSTAINABILITY GOALS AND NEXT STEPS
The United Nation's sustainable development goals (SDGs), created at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro in 2012, act as a guide for all of us to make the World a better place. They are a set of universal goals that meet the urgent environmental, political and economic challenges facing our world.
At Next Steps we also want to impact our corner of the world and we've looked at the United Nation's sustainable development goals to see where we can make a difference. You can read about how we want to make an impact in our Next Steps Reading Room.
